  • Heavy rainfall has been affecting eastern South Africa (in particular the KwaZulu-Natal Province) since 21 May, causing floods that have resulted in casualties and damage.
  • Media report, as of 24 May, one fatality, hundreds of evacuated people, several damaged buildings and destroyed roads across the KwaZulu-Natal Province. The most affected area are the Durban City (the capital of the Province) and Bluff, uMdloti and eThekwini Municipalities. In this letter an evacuation centre was opened for the evacuated people.
  • In April, the Province has been impacted by floods and landslides that resulted in nearly 450 fatalities and more than 6,800 displaced people.
  • Over the next 24 hours, more heavy rainfall is forecast over most of the KwaZulu-Natal Province.
