Greece, Late January 2023Stormy weather including strong winds, hail, heavy rain and snow in elevated areas affected parts of Greece from 24 January 2023. The Greek Fire Service said teams received 422 calls for assistance and responded to 253 interventions from 25 to 27 January, mainly for pumping flood water and cutting trees. Some rescues, mainly people in trapped vehicles, were also reported. The Fire Service responded to incidents in Attica Region (127 incidents, mainly for pumping water, some rescues reported), Central Macedonia, (23 incidents, mainly for water pumping), Western Greece (29 incidents, mainly for water pumping), Ionian Islands (Zakynthos) (52 incidents mainly for water pumping), Thessaly (8 incidents for water pumping and tree cutting), and the Peloponnese Region (14 cases, mainly for water pumping). ANA-MPA News Agency and other local media reported very heavy rain caused flooding and landslide in Zakynthos, where numerous roads were blocked and several people were rescued. Some reports said around 100 buildings were flooded. Major problems were also recorded in Imathia and Pella regional units in Central Macedonia.
