El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras - Tropical Depression AMANDA update Wed, 03 Jun 2020 12:42

  • After the passage of Tropical Depression AMANDA, and also due to the effect of Tropical Cyclone CRISTOBAL over Central America on 31 May, the number of fatalities has increased to at least 23 people.
  • In El Salvador, UN OCHA reports at least 16 fatalities, seven missing people, and 24,873 affected families. Approximately 8,000 people have been displaced.
  • In Honduras, five people died, while two are missing, as according to national authorities. More than 1,000 people were affected, and 272 houses severely damaged.
  • In Guatemala, two people died, and two others were injured, more than 124,000 people were affected, and 510 houses were damaged. The most affected areas are in eastern part of the country, including Chiquimula, El Progreso, Jalapa, Jutiapa, and Santa Rosa.
  • Humanitarian assistance has been delivered to the local population, while the affected countries continue to face the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as by the start of the rainy season in Central America.
  • Over then next 24 hours, moderate to locally heavy rainfall is forecast over most of Central America, from southern Mexico to Panama.

  • After the passage of Tropical Storm AMANDA on 31 May, fatalities and considerable damage were reported across El Salvador.
  • According to UN OCHA on 3 June, the number of fatalities increased to 27 and 6 people are missing. As search and rescue operations still continue, more than 149,500 people have been affected. Approximately 11,779 people have been displaced to 210 relief camps.
  • Several floods and landslides have been reported, with 3 major bridges collapsed and more than 573 houses damaged or destroyed. Widespread damage to infrastructure has curtialed basic services, including drinking water, electricity and sanitation.
  • Some humanitarian assistance has been delivered to those affected although, it is not sufficient to fully meet the huge needs resulting from the storm and amid challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Moderate to heavy rain is forecast over most of El Salvador on 4-5 June.

  • On 31 May - 6 June, the passage of Tropical Storms AMANDA and CRISTOBAL across central America caused heavy rainfall with strong wind, triggering floods and landslides, and leading to casualties and damage.
  • In El Salvador, 27 people died and 150,000 others were affected, as reported by UN OCHA on 8 June. Approximately 12,600 people have been displaced to 352 shelters, and 392 school buildings were damaged. According to WFP, there are about 350,000 people, who are food insecure in the hardest hit municipalities.
  • The west and centre of El Salvador are the main areas affected, while the country continues to deal with COVID-19 crisis that is compounding existing vulnerabilities.
  • In Honduras, national authorities report 4 fatalities and 3,605 affected people. About 997 houses and 12 road sections have been damaged, 2 bridges were destroyed in Valle and La Paz Departments.
  • DG ECHO is currently supporting an emergency response in both El Salvador and Guatemala, aimed at meeting the most critical life-saving needs of the population affected by the Tropical Storm.
