Event. A magnitude-5.5 offshore earthquake occurred in the Arufura Sea at 1844 Jan. 31. The epicenter was about 107 km (66 miles) east of Tual. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 8 km (5 miles) and light shaking was probably felt throughout southern coastal communities of West Papua Province and eastern parts of Maluku Province.
