TOKYO - Japan was on alert for violent winds and torrential rain on Friday as two typhoons loomed nearby.A very strong typhoon was near Taiwan, about 120 kilometres (75 miles) south of the southern Japanese island of Ishigaki as of 2:00 pm (0500 GMT), packing winds of 180 kilometres (110 miles) per hour near its centre, the weather agency said.

Super Typhoon Jelawat will trek over the Ryukyu Islands on its northeastern path Saturday. The strong storm will weaken to a Category 2 typhoon with winds between 96 and 110 mph (83 and 95 knots). It will produce heavy rainfall and strong thunderstorms across the islands.

Taipei, Sept. 26 (CNA) The Central Weather Bureau said Wednesday that it could issue a sea warning for Typhoon Jelawat by midnight as the storm moves closer to Taiwan. As of 8 a.m. Wednesday, Jelawat was centered about 790 kilometers southeast of Taiwan's southernmost tip of Eluanbi, moving in a northwesterly direction at a speed of 12 km per hour.

The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said yesterday it could issue sea alert for Typhoon Jelawat between tonight and early tomorrow morning as the storm poses a threat to the sea vessels operating at the southern and eastern Taiwan. As of 2pm yesterday, Jelawat’s center was located at 1,030km southeast of Oluanpi (鵝鑾鼻).
