  • A new volcanic eruption began on 22 August after an intense earthquake that occurred at 20:48 UTC in the Sundhnúks crater row, near Grindavik, on the Reykjanes Peninsula in south-western Iceland.
  • As of 22 August, the Icelandic Met Office (IMO) reports that a fissure has opened between Stóra-Skógfell and Sýlingarfell. A gas plume reached approximately 1 km height and the lava has flowed east and west towards Grindavíkurvegur, it is not flowing towards Grindavik. 
  • According to the Icelandic Civil Protection, Grindavík town was evacuated, and some roads have been closed.
  • National authorities declared a state of emergency due to volcanic eruption.
