A new volcanic eruption began on 22 August after an intense earthquake that occurred at 20:48 UTC in the Sundhnúks crater row, near Grindavik, on the Reykjanes Peninsula in south-western Iceland.
As of 22 August, the Icelandic Met Office (IMO) reports that a fissure has opened between Stóra-Skógfell and Sýlingarfell. A gas plume reached approximately 1 km height and the lava has flowed east and west towards Grindavíkurvegur, it is not flowing towards Grindavik.
According to the Icelandic Civil Protection, Grindavík town was evacuated, and some roads have been closed.
National authorities declared a state of emergency due to volcanic eruption.
