Uruguay, Mid-December 2023The National Emergency System (Sinae) in Uruguay reported new evacuations in the departments of Salto, Artigas and Paysandú as a result of heavy rain on 18 December 2023. Major rivers in the departments were high from around 20 October to early December 2023 (reported separately). Many of the those evacuated started to return home in early December as river levels fell. However heavy rain on 18 December caused the Uruguay River and other smaller rivers to overflow. As of 20 December a total of 866 people were displaced, including 110 in Artigas and 756 in Paysandú. On 19 December 21 people were evacuated in Salto Department. The Uruguay River also flooded areas in the department of Soriano, where 15 people were evacuated. Flooding along the Río de la Plata impacted communities in Colonia Department, with 4 people evacuated. Flooding of the Río de la Plata also impacted areas of Buenos Aires Province in Argentina at this time.
