  • The activity on Ibu volcano, located in North Maluku province, eastern Indonesia continues, and in the latest huge eruption of 20 May the ash plume reached 5 km above the summit of the crater.
  • According to the National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BNPB), 1,554 people have been evacuated to a number of evacuation points.
  • The alert level is at IV - the highest level- people cannot enter in a 4km radius from the crater of the volcano.

  • The Ibu volcano, located in North Maluku province on west Halmahera Island, eastern Indonesia, continues erupting, with ten eruptions recorded since 16 May, and the latest eruption on 29 May, when the ash plume reached 5,400 m above the summit of the crater.
  • As of 29 May, according to the National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BNPB), at least 2,011 people have been evacuated to several evacuation centres.
  • The alert level remains at IV (the highest level) and people are not allowed to enter within a 4km radius of the volcano's crater.

Updates on volcanic activity (Smithsonian)

The Smithsonian/USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report provides information about global volcanism on a weekly basis. Latest Ibu report has been published on 01 May 2024 10:14.
PVMBG reported that Ibu continued to erupt during 24-30 April. Daily white-and-gray ash plumes generally rose as high as 2 km above the summit and drifted in multiple directions. According to a social media post a loud boom followed by a roar accompanied the eruptive event on 26 April. Ash plumes rose as high as 2 km and incandescence emanated in the plume up to 700 m. At 0037 on 28 April a dense gray-to-black plume rose as high as 3.5 km and drifted W. Incandescence emanated from the summit was visible in a webcam image from 29 April. The Alert Level remained at 2 (the second highest level on a four-level scale), with the public advised to stay outside of the 2 km hazard zone and 3.5 km away from the N area of the active crater.
