  • Tropical cyclone LAN passed over central-western Honshu Island (Japan’s largest island) on 14 August and continuing in the morning of 15 August (UTC) as a tropical storm, moving northward over the Sea of Japan. On 16 August at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located approximately 260 km north of the coast of Kyoto Prefecture (central Honshu), with maximum sustained winds of 83 km/h (tropical storm).
  • According to the Japan Fire and Disaster Management Agency, 49 people were injured and 37 houses damaged across western Japan. Around 182,000 people were advised to evacuate or seek shelter. On Tuesday, all flights from Chubu, Kansai, and Nagoya airports were cancelled. Train services between Nagoya and Okayama have been halted.
  • LAN is forecast to continue moving north-eastward over the Sea of Japan and it is expected to pass close to northern Hokkaido Island, northern Japan, on 17 August in the morning (UTC), as a tropical storm.
  • Over the next 24 hours, very heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surges are forecast over central and western Honshu Island.

  • Tropical cyclone LAN continued moving north-northeastward over the Sea of Japan, well off the coast of northern Honshu Island (the main island of Japan) on 16 August, further weakening. On 17 August at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located over the Sea of Japan approximately 215 km north-west of Sapporo City, northern Japan, with maximum sustained winds of 74 km/h (tropical storm).
  • Media report, as of 17 August, 64 injured people across nine Prefectures in central Honshu (where the worst affected Prefectures are Hyogo and Osaka) and up to 305 000 power outages across the affected area in central Honshu Island.
  • On the forecast track, LAN is forecast to continue moving northeastward over the northern Sea of Japan, further weakening and dissipating on 17-18 August.
  • Over the next 48 hours, more rainfall is forecast over the whole Honshu Island and most of the Hokkaido Island.
