  • Very heavy rainfall has been affecting the northern Himalayan States of India between 13-14 August, causing flash floods and landslides that have resulted in casualties and severe damage.
  • 60 fatalities have been reported in the last three days according to Himachal state authorities as of 15 August, with the worst affected Districts being Mandi, Solan and the Capital City Shimla. Eight fatalities have been reported in Uttarakhand (with the Rishikesh City representing the worst affected area). Media also report 20 persons still missing throughout Himachal Pradesh.
  • In addition, 139 houses have been fully damaged and 639 houses partially damaged since 12 August in Himachal while 11 fully damaged and 49 partially damaged houses reported in Uttarakhand since 12 August according to the Ministry of Home Affairs. Over 800 roads including National Highways have been shut down across the state with a significant impact on over 2,000 bus routes. All educational institutes across Himachal remain closed until 16 August.
  • Over the next 24 hours, more rainfall is forecast over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Punjab State, India, Mid-August 2023Heavy rainfall in Punjab State, India in mid-August caused flooding in the districts of Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur and Rupnagar, according to local media reports. The situation was worsened following the release of excess water from the Bhakra and the Pong dams. As of 18 August, Army and NDRF teams rescued 300 people from flooded areas in Kapurthala.
