  • A new tropical storm named PEIPAH, formed in the central Philippine Sea on 31 August, is moving north, passing very close to the southern coast of Kyushu Island, southern Japan. As of 4 September at 00:00 UTC, its centre was located approximately 210 km south of Kagoshima City, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 65 km/h (tropical storm).
  • The impact of PEIPAH in the Philippines, combined with the effects of the Southwest Monsoon, affected more than 93,000 people and displaced nearly 1,300 others across four regions of the country, as reported by national authorities.
  • PEIPAH is forecast to move northwest and approach the southern coasts of Shikoku and Honshu between 4 and 5 September. The storm is expected to cross cities such as Kochi (Shikoku), Wakayama (Honshu), Okazaki (Honshu), and Hamamatsu (Honshu).
  • Heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds are anticipated across most of Shikoku and central and southern Honshu from 4–6 September.

  • Tropical storm PEIPAH continued north-east on 4 September toward the Shikoku island as a tropical storm. It made landfall over the coast of south-western Shikoku island, in the area of Sukumo city, on 4 September around 18.00 UTC and continued moving eastward over southern Japan. On 5 September at 3.00 UTC, its centre was located in the Mikawa Bay, close to the city of Toyohashi, southern Honshu island, the main island of the country, with maximum sustained winds of 83 km/h.   
  • Its passage over southern Japan caused heavy rainfall, floods and landslides. National authorities issued several alerts for floods and landslides.
  • PEIPAH is expected to continue eastward just south of the Honshu island - the main island of the country- further weakening and dissipating on 6 September.
  • Over the next 48 hours heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surges are still forecast over most of Japan, except over the Hokkaido island in the north of the country.
