  • A new Tropical Cyclone named MAYSAK, formed on 28 August, is moving north-northwest over the Philippines Sea. On 31 August at 0.00 UTC, its centre was approximately 392 km south-east of Miyako-jima Island (Miyako Islands, southern Japan), with maximum sustained winds of 176 km/h.
  • MAYSAK is forecast to continue north-northwestward and will approach southern Okinawa Islands on 31 August-1 September (particularly Kume-jima Island), before it moves north toward the East China Sea and the southern Republic of Korea.
  • For the next 24 hours, heavy rain, strong winds and storm surge are forecast over the whole Okinawa and Miyako Islands while heavy rain and strong winds are expected over coastal regions of Taiwan, and Zhejiang Province (eastern China).
  • Red warnings for storm, strong winds and storm surge have been issued for Okinawa and Miyako Islands, a blue Blue Typhoon Warning for Taiwan and Zhejiang Province.

  • Typhoon Maysak passed Japan's southernmost islands on Tuesday 1 September and is headed toward the country's main southern island and the Korean Peninsula.
  • According to media, in Okinawa Prefecture, localised evacuation orders have been issued, at least 250 flights have been cancelled and many schools and public offices were closed from 31 August. More than 20,000 homes were left without electricity.
  • Typhoon Maysak could produce far more widespread damage later this week. Forecast models have consistently taken Maysak on an arcing path north and northeast into the Korean Peninsula. 
  • A red warning for heavy rain, storm surge and floods has been issued for several parts of Ryukyu Islands while a blue typhoon warning for Taiwan and the Provinces of Zhejiang, Shanghai, and Jiangsu is still in effect.

  • Tropical Cyclone MAYSAK continues moving north over the East China Sea towards the southern Korean Peninsula. On 2 September at 0.00 UTC, its centre was approximately 318 km south-east of Jeju Island (Republic of Korea), with maximum sustained winds of 194 km/h.
  • According to the Fire Disaster Management Agency of Japan (FDMA), following the passage of MAYSAK in Okinawa Prefecture, eight people have been injured, 57,569 people are still under evacuation advisory and five buildings have been damaged.
  • MAYSAK is forecast to pass between Jeju Island and Fukue Island (southern Japan) on 2 September, late morning (UTC), and make landfall over southern Republic of Korea close to Gwangyang City.
  • Heavy rain, strong winds and storm surge are forecast  Amami Islands, Goto Islands and Kyushu Island,  most parts of Republic of Korea, Democratic People's Republic of Korea and north-eastern China.
  • Red warnings for storm and high waves have been issued for Kyushu Island, Amami and Goto Islands while a Typhoon warning is in effect for southern  Republic of Korea including Jeju Island.

  • MAYSAK made landfall over the south-eastern coast of the Republic of Korea on 2 September, near Busan City (Gyeongnam Province), bringing heavy rain, strong wind and storm surge, and leading to casualties and damage.
  • According to media reports, in the Republic of Korea, one person died and another has been injured. More than 275,000 families remained without power, 104 houses were flooded or damaged and evacuation orders have been issued in Gyeongnam Province before MAYSAK's arrival.
  • In the Democratic People's Republic of Korea widespread floods have been reported particularly across the eastern Provinces, including Kangwon and North Hamgyong.  
  • On the forecast track, MAYSAK will move north toward northeastern China, weakening as an extra tropical low. On 3-4 September, heavy rain and strong wind are forecast over most parts of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and northeastern China.
  • A blue Typhoon warning is still in effect over the coastal regions of northern Zhejiang, Yangtze River Estuary, Jiangsu, Shandong Peninsula and East Liaoning Peninsula. On 7 September, typhoon HAISHEN will make landfall over the same area affected by MAYSAK.

  • Tropical Cyclone HAISHEN is strenghtening, as it is moving north-west over the northern Philippine Sea, towards the Ryukyu Islands (southern Japan). On 3 September, its centre was located over the sea approximately 1,300 km south-east of Okinawa Island (Ryukyu Islands), with maximum sustained winds of 157 km/h.
  • HAISHEN is forecast to strengthen as it moves north-west, over northern Philippine Sea, reaching central Ryukyu Islands in the early morning of 6 September, with maximum sustained winds up to 222 km/h. After that, HAISHEN is expected to moving north, over East China Sea, reaching the Korean Peninsula on 7 September. These areas have already been affected by the passage of Tropical Cyclone MAYSAK on 31 August - 3 September.
  • Heavy rainfall is forecast over central Ryukyu Islands from 5 September.
