THOUSANDS of residents in northern Japan have been ordered to evacuate as a powerful typhoon bears down on the island of Hokkaido. LOCAL authorities issued evacuation orders for Nemuro city on the coast and neighbouring areas, as Typhoon Choi -Wan approached from the east, the Hokkaido daily reports.

Tropical Storm Choi -Wan, located near 21N/158E yesterday (4 October), is forecast to move WNW-NNW over the next days and intensify to a very large typhoon. A large area of HIGH to VERY HIGH sea, significant 7-14 meters, will affect the waters southeast of Japan from 7 October and spread northward.

Tropical Depression Choi-wan formed in the northwestern Pacific Ocean as NASA's Terra satellite passed overhead and captured infrared data on the developing storm.
