Seismul s-a produs la ora locala 23.43 (joi, 04.43 ora Romaniei), la 20 de kilometri sud de orasul Iquique si, "din cauza nivelului magnitudinii s-a trecut la starea de alerta de tsunami" pe toata coasta chiliana, a anuntat Serviciul hidrografic si oceanografic al armatei chiliene (Shoa).
