Die Mentawai-Inseln rund 150 Kilometer vor der Küste lagen besonders nah am Zentrum des Bebens. Als Vorsichtsmaßnahme wurden Helferteams des Militärs und des Katastrophenschutzes zu den Inseln geschickt.
