توصل فريق من علماء في الجيولوجيا الفيزيائية من الاتحاد الأوروبي والولايات المتحدة والصين إلى النتيجة أن كويكبين وقعا في محيط المريخ منذ مليارات من السنين مما سبب نشوء موجي تسونامي. اعتمد العلماء في رأيهم هذا على دراسة صور للبنى الجيولوجية والحرارية للسهول الطويلة والعريضة الظاهرة على سطح المريخ وهي ناجمة عن حدوث فيضانات والتعري.
