Event. A magnitude-5.3 earthquake occurred on New Ireland island of Papua New Guinea at 17:28 May 16 The epicenter was about 138 km (86 miles) south-southwest of Kokopo. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 35 km (22 miles), and weak-to-light shaking was probably felt throughout New Britain and New Ireland islands.
