Tibet Autonomous Region, China and Nepal, Late August 2026, Late August 2026Disaster authorities in Nepal reported severe flooding in areas of Bagmati Province in late August 2026. Local media in China also reported incidents in Gyirong County, Shigatse, Tibet Autonomous Region. A similar event occurred in this area on 08 July 2025. Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) said preliminary analysis of satellite images showed that an ice-and-rock landslide about 20 km northeast of the Rasuwagadhi border crossing caused a debris-laden flood in the Lhende River. Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) said satellite images showed that debris had blocked the river, forming a temporary lake which later burst. The resulting flood travelled downstream through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers. DHM also reported that there had been no heavy rainfall in the area before the flood. The assessments remain preliminary. On 28 August, NDRRMA gave an update on the cause of the catastrophe. NDRRMA said that on 26 August approximately 1 km² of ice and rock collapsed in the upper Lhende Khola area near the Nepal–China border. It says this produced a seismic signal equivalent to approximately M5.2 and resulted in the severe flooding along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers. NDRRMA estimates a temporary lake of about 0.11 km² has formed behind the blockage. It warns that failure of the natural dam could cause another large flood, and says preliminary assessment suggests there may be additional lakes in the area.Tue 1 Sep 2026Provided by Copernicus EMS GloFAS
