  • Since 22 June, multiple wildfires have been burning across the Chios island, eastern Greece, causing population evacuations and widespread damage. The fire is still ongoing, thus the exact burned area cannot be calculated.
  • Since the day the fire started, the settlements of Kofina, Agia Anna, Agios Makarios Vrontadon, Agios Markos, Agiasmata, Vessa, Lithi, Elata, and Armolia have been evacuated.
  • National authorities deployed at least 440 firefighters, 85 vehicles, 13 helicopters, and 4 aircrafts to contain the wildfires.
  • The Copernicus Emergency Management Service was activated in rapid mapping mode () on 22 June, and three maps have been produced so far.
  • Over the next 48 hours, according to the European Forest Fire Information System (JRC-EFFIS), the fire danger forecast is expected from high to very extreme across Chios island.

  • Firefighting operations involving 444 firefighters, 21 ground teams, 85 vehicles and 30 volunteer firefighters with 4 vehicles are still ongoing in response to the wildfire affecting Chios Island since 22 June. According to the European Forest Fire Information System (JRC-EFFIS), the burned area has reached approximately 6,700 ha. Media report that the extinguishing efforts are currently focused on the areas of Lithi and Kontilopos, in the western part of the island. Nearly 20 villages have been evacuated as a precautionary measure.
  • The Copernicus Emergency Management Service was activated in rapid mapping mode (EMSR806) on 22 June, and five maps have been produced to date.
  • Over the next 48 hours, the fire danger forecast across Chios Island is expected to range from high to very extreme, according to JRC-EFFIS.
