Tropical Cyclone Jobo, Tanzania, Seychelles, Comoros, April 2021Tropical Cyclone Jobo formed over the south-western Indian Ocean around 20 April and moved west-northwest towards the eastern coast of Tanzania. Heavy rain was reported in the Seychelles and Comoros as the storm made its way over the Indian Ocean. There were no reports of significant flooding, however. Tanzania meteorological Authority said a much weakened Jobo made landfall late on 24 April in areas of south of Pwani and Dar es Salaam regions. Jobo soon left Tanzania's area of responsibility. At the time there was sparse information regarding the effects of Tropical Cyclone Jobo. However in a report of 13 May 2021, IFRC said surveys revealed 9 districts across 8 regions (Dar es salaam, Mbeya, Shinyanga, Kagera, Kilimanjaro, Manyara, Zanzibar island and Morogoro) of Tanzania were affected by strong winds and flash floods, which had continued for some days after the storm made landfall. IFRC said that, as of April 30, a total of 6,001 households (30,005 people) were reported directly affected and 22 people died. Infrastructure damage has been significant, including the education sector, health sector and the road network. Some roads in Dar es Salaam, Mbeya and Kilimanjaro are not passable paralyzing transport and humanitarian aid delivery to the affected population by road. Water facilities have also been affected, including the destruction of pipelines and wells leading to poor access to safe and clean water, increasing the likelihood of disease outbreak including dysentery and water-borne diseases. A need to avail water treatment tablets is important to ensure access to safe and clean drinking water.Fri 14 May 2021Provided by Copernicus EMS GloFAS
