Zambia, January 2023Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) reported wide areas of Southern and Central Provinces were under water due to overflowing rivers in late January 2023. On 27 January DMMU conducted an aerial survey of Bwengwa, Namwala, Monze, and Mumbwa districts and reported damage to homes, farmland and loss of livestock. DMMU said d away the floods have exposed the populations to high levels of risk of waterborne diseases with sanitation facilities completely submerged. Furthermore, communities are isolated leaving them without access to critical healthcare and educational facilities. DMMU reported heavy rains caused flooding and damage in Lusangazi District (also known as Msanzala) in Eastern Province, where several homes were damaged or destroyed on 16 January 2023. Twenty-seven households were affected and lost almost everything, DDMU said. The district is close to the Luangwa River. Residents were advised to relocate and rebuild more resilient housing. DMMU also said heavy rain and flooding in Mumbwa District, Central Province, damaged the Chiwena bridge and other river crossing points on 17 January, disrupting transport. Heavy rain damaged or destroyed homes in Chongwe district, Lusaka Province, around this time. DMMU reported 29 houses collapsed and 37 were severely damaged. Some parts of Luano district in Central Province were cut off due to floods affecting over 20,000 people, DDMU reported on 26 January. On 26 January Water Resources Management Authority (WARMA) reported flooding of the Magoye River in Mazabuka District.Sun 29 Jan 2023Provided by Copernicus EMS GloFAS
