Cyclonic Storm Biparjoy, India and Pakistan, June 2023Biparjoy made landfall as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) on near Jakhau port in Gujarat, India, on 16 June 2023. Gujarat State, India Around 94,000 people were evacuated from coastal regions of Gujarat State, India, ahead of Biparjoy making landfall. Heavy rain, strong winds, storm surge and rough seas were reported along the Gujarat coast. Three fatalities were reported in Kachchh and Rajkot districts. Sindh Province, Pakistan UNOCHA reported 81,925 people were pre-emptively evacuated across the districts of Karachi Malir, Badin, Sujawal and Thatta in Sindh Province. As of 19 June, Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) in Sindh reported 4 fatalities, 5 injured, 2,460 houses damaged and 190 destroyed in Tharparkar, Umerkot, Sujawal and Thatta districts. Note: It is not clear if the damage was a result of strong winds, storm surge or flooding. Note: Heavy rain in Rajasthan State, India, on 18 June was blamed on the remnants of Biparjoy.
