Hurricane Melissa, Jamaica, October 2025Hurricane Melissa made landfall in New Hope, Westmoreland, Jamaica, around midday local time on 28 October 2025 with maximum sustained winds estimated at 295 kilometres per hour (185 miles per hour). As of 28 October, the government reported almost 15,000 people were in shelters across Jamaica and more than 530,000 people were without power. Jamaica's Meteorological Service reported weather network data recorded more than 250 mm of rain in southern parishes by the evening of 28 October. The government reported several roads and bridges were flooded as a result. Floodwaters trapped several families in their homes in Black River. The situation was expected to worsen over the coming days, with more than 750 mm of rain likely in some areas.
