Syria - Severe weather
  • Between 22 and 24 January, a third wave of severe weather (the first occurred at the end of December 2025) brought heavy snowfall, freezing temperatures, strong winds, and localized flooding across multiple governorates.
  • According to UN OCHA, the snowstorm affected 37 IDP camps housing roughly 2 800 people in several sub-districts of Aleppo and Idlib governorates. The storm completely destroyed 264 tents and partially damaged 1,496 others. In Hama governorate, 2 583 families were impacted by flooding, strong winds, and infrastructure damage. In Homs governorate, river overflow in Um Jameh caused a bridge collapse and flooded homes, prompting the evacuation of 25 people. Additionally, heavy snow, ice and floods have temporarily blocked access to many camps, as well as several roads, major mountain passes and bridges.
  • For the next 24 hours, moderate precipitation is expected across northern Syria.
  • DG ECHO partners have responded to households affected by the adverse weather events through emergency multi-purpose cash assistance.
