  • The death toll continues to rise following landslides across several parts of the Gamo Zone in the Southern Ethiopia Regional State.
  • According to media reports, 125 people have died and more than 11 000 have been displaced. Numerous houses, farmlands and infrastructure have been destroyed, particularly by the landslides. The worst-hit localities are Gacho?Baba, Bonke, Kamba?Zuria, and West?Abaya.
  • For the next 24?hours, cloudy skies with light to moderate rain are expected across the affected area.

  • Torrential rains in the Gammo Zone in South Ethiopia Regional State caused flooding and landslides on 10 March 2026, affecting 11 villages, claiming at least 96 lives, and destroying property in 780 households.

  • Altogether, around 1,950 households were affected, and all villages reported displaced populations, now sheltering in churches and public spaces. The worst-hit areas were Mazo Doisa, Kuyile, and Laka. Accessibility remains difficult, with several roads remaining blocked. 

  • The Ethiopian Red Cross Society deployed staff, volunteers, and ambulances to address the most urgent needs which include, food, non-food items, shelter, WASH and health. 

  • For the next 24 hours, light to moderate rain is expected across the affected administrative division.

South Ethiopia Regional State, Ethiopia, Mid-March 2026Heavy rain in the Ethiopia Highlands caused flooding and landslides in the South Ethiopia Regional State in mid-March 2026. Local officials said in a statement of 12 March that heavy rainfall triggered landslides in 4 woredas - Gacho Baba, Kamba, Bonke, and Arba Minch - in Gamo Zone, South Ethiopia Region, killing 70 people. The disaster displaced 575 households (3,480 people) and destroyed 190 homes. Media reports, quoting local police, said hat as many as 128 people were feared missing as of 12 March.
