  • Heavy rainfall, strong winds, river overflows, floods and landslides have battered the Canary Islands since 18 March, prompting rescues, evacuations, travel disruptions and extensive damage.
  • According to media as of 23 March, rescues were carried out in coastal areas and ravines, including the retrieval of a man on 21 March in Barranco Hondo (Gáldar, Gran Canaria) and the extraction of three people from the Barranco de Guiniguada ravine (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria). Media reports further indicate that the neighbourhoods of Los Pérez and El Hornillo in Agaete (Gran Canaria) were evacuated as the nearby dam’s flow rose sharply.
  • Additionally, many tourists were left stranded as more than 40 flights have been cancelled. Several roads are closed due to landslides and resultant debris.
  • On 24 March, the authorities issued orange weather warnings for rain and yellow warnings for storms and wind for La Palma, Tenerife and Gran Canaria, and yellow warnings for rain for La Gomera and El Hierro. An improvement in weather conditions across the archipelago is expected by 25 March.
