  • Bengaluru city in Karnataka state, southwestern India, has experienced heavy rainfall, widespread flooding, and lightning strikes from 18 to 19 May, resulting in fatalities and significant damage.
  • According to media reports, as at 21 May, five people were killed due to rain-related incidents and lightning. Around 500 buildings were flooded, and power outages and public transport disruptions were reported, as were uprooted trees and killed livestock.
  • On 21 May, more heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast over southern India – authorities issued a red alert for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning for coastal and south Karnataka state. On 22 May, only moderate rain is expected for the affected areas in the south - coastal Karnataka state remains in orange alert - while heavy to very heavy rain is forecast for central and northeastern India.

  • Heavy rainfall, strong winds, thunderstorms and lightning continued to affect several states of north-eastern India over the last few days, triggering landslides and causing floods, flash floods and a number of severe weather-related incidents that have resulted in an increased number of casualties and damage.
  • The National Emergency Response Centre (NDMI) reports, as of 4 June, 42 fatalities, of whom 11 fatalities were in Arunachal Pradesh, 11 in Assam, eight in Manipur, seven in Meghalaya, three in Sikkim, and two in Nagaland.
  • The same source also reports more than 46,150 evacuated people in 297 relief camps across the aforementioned states and the Tripura state. The worst affected is the Assam state, with 31,676 evacuated people and more than 530,000 affected people.
  • Over the next 96 hours, more heavy rainfall with locally very heavy rainfall is forecast over most of north-eastern India.
