  • An earthquake of magnitude 7.3 M at a depth of 20 km occurred offshore near the eastern Aleutian Islands in Alaska (USA) on 16 July at 20.37 UTC (11:37 local time, Alaska Time Zone). The epicentre was located in the sea, approximately 60 km south of Unga Island. The earthquake was followed by 35 aftershocks, with magnitudes up to 5.7 M, across the affected area.
  • According to the US Geological Survey (USGS) Prompt Assessment of Global Earthquakes for Response (PAGER) estimates, up to 1,000 people were exposed to strong shaking, and 2,000 people to moderate shaking.
  • A minor tsunami was recorded in Sand Point City, Aleutians East Borough, and some areas may continue to experience small sea-level changes, as reported by the US Tsunami Warning System.
  • According to media, there are no reports of any casualties and damage, but residents in coastal communities were advised to evacuate inland to higher ground as a precaution.
