  • Two earthquakes, measuring 6.2 M and 6.3 M, struck north-western Venezuela at depths of 8 km and 14 km, respectively. The 6.2 M event occurred on 24 September at 18:21 UTC (22:21 local time), while the 6.3 M event followed on 25 September at 03:51 UTC (23:51 local time on 24 September). Both epicentres were located 24–27 km east-northeast of Mene Grande city in Zulia state. A third earthquake of 4.9 M affected the same area on 25 September at 03:51 UTC.
  • 30,000 people were exposed to very strong shaking, while up to 246,000 were exposed to strong shaking. Tremors were felt in northern Colombia.
  • According to media reports, some buildings were lightly damaged, such as a church in Maracaibo, Zulia state. No immediate casualties have been reported. DG ECHO partners are present in the area affected.
  • Five major earthquakes have struck Venezuela’s north in the last century - including a 7.2 quake off its northern coast in 2018 - causing more than 400 deaths. 80% of the population is living in active seismic zones.
