  • An earthquake of 7.4 M at a depth of 58.1 km occurred over the sea in the southern Philippines, on 10 October at 01.43 (UTC) (09.43 local time). The epicentre was approximately 17 km east of the coast of Mindanao Island, 20 km east of Santiago municipality, in the province of Davao Oriental, and approximately 120 km north-east of Davao City. Several aftershocks with magnitudes between 4.8 M and 5.9 M were recorded in the area. USGS PAGER estimates that up to 30,000 people were exposed to severe shaking, and 2,287,000 to very strong shaking.
  • According to media, as of 10 October, at least two people died in Davao Oriental province, and 250 people have been evacuated from a damaged hospital and displaced in temporary shelters. Several structures have been damaged, including hospitals and schools, and an evacuation order has been issued for the coastal areas.
  • National authorities were mobilised to assist the affected people.
  • The Philippines was hit by a 6.9 M earthquake on 30 September that caused 74 fatalities and is still recovering from this event.

  • After the earthquakes of 7.4 M and 6.8 M that occurred on 10 October east of the coast of Mindanao Island, southern Philippines, the humanitarian impact is still increasing.
  • According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), as of 14 October, the death toll stands at eight fatalities across the Davao region. In addition, NDRRMC also reports 12,960 displaced people - of whom 12,768 are in eight evacuation centres - and a total of more than 845,000 affected people across the Davao and the Caraga regions.
