  • Wildfires have been burning across southern USA, in particular northern Texas, and the neighbouring western Oklahoma over the past few days, prompting evacuations and causing casualties and widespread damage.
  • National authorities report three major ongoing active fires. The Smokehouse Creek Fire, across the Canadian, Glazier, Pampa and Miami Communities (Texas) and the neighbouring area in Oklahoma, has burnt an area of nearly 344,000 ha and is currently not contained. The nearby Windy Deuce Fire has burnt an area of more than 57,000 ha and is currently partially contained. Finally, the Grape Vine Creek Fire in the same area has burnt over 12,000 ha and is currently partially contained.
  • Media report, as of 29 February, one fatality in the Hutchinson County and around 100 burned houses across the Hutchinson and the Moore Counties (Texas). In addition, media report 13 burned houses across Oklahoma. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reports mandatory evacuation orders for 6,500 people across the affected area.
  • Over the next 24 hours, according to the JRC Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS), the fire danger forecast is from moderate to very high over northern Texas and western Oklahoma.

  • Wildfires continued to burn across southern USA (in particular northern Texas and the neighbouring western Oklahoma) over the past week, prompting evacuations and causing casualties and widespread damage.
  • The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reports, as of 7 March, three major ongoing active fires. The Smokehouse Creek Fire, across the Hutchinson County (Texas) and the neighbouring area in Oklahoma, has burnt so far an area of nearly 429,000 hectares (the largest fire on record in Texas) and is currently 39% contained. The nearby Windy Deuce Fire (Moore County, Texas) has burnt an area of more than 58,000 hectares and is currently 58% contained. Finally, the Catesby Fire (Ellis County, Oklahoma) has burnt over 36,000 hectares and is currently 50% contained.
  • FEMA reports eight injured people, 5,300 mandatory evacuation orders still in force and a total of 428 destroyed structures due to the three aforementioned wildfires. The death toll due to the Smokehouse Creek Fire remains of one fatality.
  • Over the next 24 hours, according to the JRC Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS), the fire danger forecast is from moderate to high across the affected area.
