  • Since 18 January, heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and strong winds gusting up to 120 km/h has been affecting southern Italy (particularly Sicily, Sardinia and Calabria) and Malta, resulting in casualties, evacuations and damage.
  • In Italy, as a preventive measure, hundreds of residents have been evacuated from coastal areas of Calabria and Sardinia. Schools are closed in several cities and towns across Calabria, Sardinia and Sicily, and widespread damage has been reported, especially along the coastal areas.
  • In Malta, no casualties have been recorded, but extensive damage to farms, coastal businesses, construction sites and maritime infrastructure has been registered.
  • The Copernicus EMS was activated in rapid mapping mode () on 19 January for Italy, and 17 products have been published so far.
  • On 21-22 January, moderate rain is expected across most of southern Italy, including Calabria, Sicily, Apulia, Basilicata and southern Sardinia. On 21 January, red alerts for hydrological risk remain in effect across the aforementioned regions.
  • Across Malta, cloudy skies with scattered rain are forecast for the next 24 hours.

  • Very heavy rainfall has been affecting southern mainland Italy (in particular the Calabria region) and the islands of Sardinia and Sicily over the last 24 hours, triggering landslides and severe weather-related incidents that have resulted in preventive population evacuations. 
  • Media report, as of 20 January, two rescued people (previously reported as missing) across the Urzulei municipality (Ogliastra province, Sardinia region) and approximately 200 evacuated people across the provinces of Messina, Catania and Siracusa as a preventive measure (eastern and south-eastern Sicily region). Several blocked roads, cancelled ferries and closed schools were also reported across the Calabria, Sardinia and Sicily regions.
  • The Copernicus EMS was activated in rapid mapping mode () on 19 January.
  • Over the next 48 hours, very heavy rainfall is still forecast over the Calabria and Sicily regions, while very heavy rainfall is forecast over the Sardinia region only today.
