  • Heavy rains and the swelling of the Loukkos River have triggered severe flooding across north-western Morocco, resulting in evacuations and rescues, with the city of?Ksar?El?Kébir in the Tanger-Tetouan-Al?Hoceima region being most affected. The situation has been exacerbated by the release of water from the Oued?Makhazine dam.
  • According to media reports dated?2?February, more than?50?000 residents (roughly half of Ksar?El?Kébir’s population) have been evacuated and the main entrance to the city has been sealed off. Rescue teams have also saved four people from the Oued?Ouargha in the neighboring province of Ouezzane. Rising levels of the Sebou River have forced additional evacuations in Sidi?Kacem province.
  • The flooding has cut off electricity in several neighborhoods, and schools remain closed until?8?February.
  • Forecasts for the next 72?hours call for further heavy, localized rainfall across northern Morocco.

Heavy rainfall has been affecting north-western Morocco, in particular the Ksar El Kébir city, in the Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, causing floods that have resulted in casualties and damage.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) reports, as of 2 February, 20 000 displaced people.
Over the next 72 hours, more rainfall with locally heavy rainfall is forecast over northern Morocco.
