France - Severe weather and floods
  • Since 18 February, a storm has lashed south-west France, from Brittany to Normandy, bringing heavy rainfall, flooding, and strong winds. The storm has caused widespread disruptions, including power outages, traffic delays, and structural damage.
  • In Chalonnes-sur-Loire, one person is missing after a boat capsized on the Loire River, while two others were rescued. Over 2 000 homes in Saintes were flooded, and 4 200 households in Dordogne lost power on 19 February. Rail services were disrupted in western and southern regions, particularly in Périgueux and Bordeaux, where riverside markets were cancelled. Schools and kindergartens closed, while emergency shelters opened for the homeless. Several vehicles were also damaged in Rochefort
  • Weather conditions will improve as of today, with some light shower and low cumulative rainfall until 25 February.
  • Further rain is expected over the next 48 hours along France’s Atlantic coast, particularly in Brittany, with isolated showers in southern Nouvelle-Aquitaine on 20 February. Three departments (Loire-Atlantique, Charente-Maritime, and Maine-et-Loire) remain on red flood alert, while 14 others along the coast are under orange alert for flooding and storm surge risks.
