  • The humanitarian impact is increasing on Sumatra Island following recent intense rainfall. The worst-affected provinces are Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
  • According to the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB), a total of 442 people have died - 217 in North Sumatra, 96 in Aceh, and 129 in West Sumatra- and 402 are still missing, 209 in North Sumatra, 75 in Aceh, and 118 in West Sumatra. Additionally, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, IFRC reports 646 injured people, nearly 300,000 displaced individuals, and 1.1 million affected.
  • National authorities are providing logistical support for those affected.
  • On 1-2 December, light to locally moderate rain is expected in the aforementioned provinces.

  • The humanitarian impact continues to increase across north-western Indonesia, Peninsular Malaysia, and southern Thailand following the heavy rainfall, floods, and landslides that have occurred over the past week.
  • In Indonesia, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) reports 593 fatalities, 468 missing people, and 2,600 injured across the provinces of West Sumatra, North Sumatra, and Aceh. Additionally, 1.5 million people have been affected, and almost 600,000 have been displaced. In Malaysia, two people have died, and 18,700 people have been displaced, according to the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management (AHA Centre). Furthermore, in Thailand, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) reports 178 fatalities, four injured, and more than two million affected.
  • For the next three days, moderate to locally heavy rainfall is expected across Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia.

  • Since late November, heavy rainfall has affected northwestern Indonesia, causing flooding and landslides with a significant humanitarian impact.
  • According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA), as of 4 December, 836 fatalities have been reported in 50 districts across the provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. There are 518 missing individuals, 2,664 injured, and 881,035 internally displaced people, including 817,856 in Aceh, 40,355 in North Sumatra, and 22,824 in West Sumatra. Additionally, 64,643 houses have been damaged in the provinces of Aceh and West Sumatra.
  • DG ECHO Field Expert will travel to Indonesia to assess the humanitarian situation from 5 to 10 December.
  • More rainfall is expected across most of Sumatra Island from 5 to 7 December.

  • The number of casualties across three provinces of Sumatra (Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra) due to recent torrential rains continues to rise.
  • According to the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre), 961 people died, almost 300 remain missing, 5,000 have been injured and almost 160,000 have been displaced. In a separate incident, a landslide on 5 December in Bandung, Java Island left three people missing.
  • Humanitarian needs continue to rise, with life-saving support identified as the highest priority. All partners consistently report that the most urgent requirements are WASH services, food assistance, emergency supplies, and logistics support. A DG ECHO field expert is currently in Indonesia to assess the situation on the ground and engage with humanitarian partners.
  • For the next 48 hours, light rain is expected across most of the affected provinces in Sumatra.

  • The death toll from severe flooding in Indonesia, particularly in northern Sumatra, has been increasing since 17 November.
  • As of 10 December, the National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB) reported 977 fatalities, with Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra being the most affected provinces. There are also 260 missing individuals and 5,037 injured people. Additionally, approximately 159,000 homes and 3,296 public facilities have been damaged.
  • More rainfall is forecast across northern Sumatra Island on 11 and 12 December.

  • Following the very heavy rainfall, widespread floods, and several landslides that have affected the island of Sumatra, north-western Indonesia since the second half of November, the humanitarian impact continues to rise.
  • The Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) reports, as of 15 December, 1,016 fatalities, of whom 424 are across the Aceh province, 349 across the North Sumatra province and 243 more in the West Sumatra province. In addition, 212 missing people were reported across the three aforementioned affected provinces. The BNPB also reports 624,670 displaced people.
  • Moreover, heavy rainfall has affected Bali island, central Indonesia over the last 48 hours, causing floods that resulted in casualties. The BNPB reports one fatality and 165 evacuated people across the Denpasar city area.

  • In recent days, parts of Java and Kalimantan have experienced heavy rainfall and strong winds, leading to floods and severe weather-related incidents. 
  • According to the national authorities, one person was injured and 60 houses were damaged due to extreme weather in Sampang Regency, East Java. In Jember Regency, East Java, 14 people were evacuated as nearly 1 300 houses were flooded, while over 1 500 homes were impacted in Banyuwangi Regency. In South Kalimantan, floods affected 289 houses in Banjar Regency.
  • Meanwhile, the death toll from flooding in northwestern Sumatra, which started in mid-November, has risen to 1 059, with over 50 people missing.
  • Light rain and isolated thunderstorms are forecast for the two affected regions on 18–19 December.

  • On 6 January, flash floods caused by heavy rainfall have stuck Sitaro Islands regency, North Sulawesi province, central Indonesia, resulting in fatalities and damage.
  • According to the National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BNPB), as of 7 January, 16 people were killed, 22 people injured, and 682 people displaced. Additionally, seven houses have been completely destroyed, 29 houses were heavily damaged, and 112 houses were slightly damaged, while several roads were blocked, too.
  • Over the next 48 hours, additional rain with isolated heavy rain is forecast across Indonesia.

  • Following the very heavy rainfall, widespread floods, and several landslides that affected the Sumatra island, north-western Indonesia, southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia since the second half of November, the humanitarian impact continues to rise.
  • In Indonesia, the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) reports, as of 3 December, 604 fatalities across the North Sumatra, West Sumatra and Aceh provinces, in addition 464 people missing were also reported across the three provinces. The IFRC also reports 2,600 injured, 578,000 displaced people and a total of approximately 1.5 million affected people throughout the affected provinces.
  • In Thailand, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) reports 181 fatalities and around 3.9 million affected people across the southern provinces in the Malay Peninsula.
  • Moreover, in Malaysia, according to the ASEAN Disaster Information Network (ADINet), the death toll stands at two, and more than 12,600 people evacuated across 118 evacuation centres were reported.
  • Over the next 72 hours, more rainfall with locally heavy rainfall is forecast over the whole Sumatra island and most of Peninsular Malaysia.

  • Heavy rainfall continues to affect southeast Asia, particularly northwestern Indonesia, southern Thailand, and peninsular Malaysia, leading to a rising humanitarian impact.
  • In Indonesia, UN OCHA reports 770 fatalities, 463 missing, 746,000 displaced, and 3.2 million affected across three provinces of Sumatra: Aceh, West Sumatra, and North Sumatra. In Thailand, the same source reported 185 deaths, 367 missing, 4 million affected, and 219,000 displaced people in 12 southern provinces. Meanwhile, in Malaysia, 37,000 people have been displaced across eight states, Kelantan, Perlis, Perak, Selangor, Kedah, Penang, Terengganu, and Pahang.
  • On 4–6 December, moderate to locally heavy rainfall is expected across most of Sumatra, peninsular Malaysia, and the southernmost regions of Thailand.
