  • Over the past week, central and southern Italy have been hit by heavy rain and strong winds, triggering landslides, floods, and related incidents that have caused casualties, evacuations, and damage.
  • According to the Italian Civil Protection, one person died in the municipality of Formello (Lazio region) due to a landslide. Yesterday morning, as preventive measure, around 50 people were evacuated in the municipality of Fiumicino (Lazio) and were able to return to their homes later in the afternoon. Evacuations are still ongoing, although the number of evacuees has decreased from 1 000 to 500. 
  • Widespread flood damage were recorded across Calabria, where several roads have been closed.
  • For the next 24 hours, heavy snow is expected in the Alps (northern Italy); central Italy will see cloudy skies with possible rain; and light to moderate rain is forecast over the Campania, Basilicata, Calabria, and Puglia regions.
