  • On 12 May, a new volcanic explosion occurred at Santiaguito Volcano, located on the collapsed flank of the larger Santa María Volcano in Quetzaltenango Department, western Guatemala. The explosion produced an ash column that rose up to 3,500 m above sea level, with ash spreading 15 to 40 km to the west and southwest. Lahars have also been recorded on the east, south, southwest, and west flanks of the volcano.
  • The Guatemalan Coordinating Agency for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) reports that the communities of Finca El Faro, El Palmar, and Quetzaltenango have been affected by ashfall.
  • CONRED continues to closely monitor the situation and has advised residents near the volcano to follow official guidance in the event of ashfall.
