  • Since 4 June, the Fuego volcano, located on the borders of the Chimaltenango, Escuintla, and Sacatepéquez departments in southern Guatemala, increased its activity. This has been characterised by explosions producing ash plumes reaching nearly 5 km above sea level and lava flows extending up to 600 metres. Additionally, pyroclastic flows have reached distances of up to 7 km along the Las Lajas, Ceniza, and Seca ravines.
  • According to the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED), ash has moved in the northwest, west, and southwest directions, and the ash-fall affected communities in the municipalities of Siquinalá, Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa, and Escuintla in Escuintla Department, as well as Acatenango and San Pedro Yepocapa in Chimaltenango Department. Moreover, authorities have conducted the preventive evacuation of residents from nearby communities, who are being relocated to the shelter set up at the Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa Sports Center.
  • CONRED continues to closely monitor the situation and has advised residents near the volcano to follow official guidance in the event of increased volcanic activity.

  • The humanitarian impact of the Fuego volcano eruption, which is located on the borders of the Chimaltenango, Escuintla, and Sacatepéquez departments in southern Guatemala, has increased. The eruption on 6 June was characterized by strong pyroclastic flows and ashfalls that reached a distance of 7 km, causing displacement in the area.
  • According to the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) and media, as of 8 June, 818 people have been displaced from the affected municipalities: Siquinalá, Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa, Escuintla, in the Escuintla department, and Acatenango and San Pedro Yepocapa, in the Chimaltenango department. At least four evacuation centres have been set up in the Escuintla department. In addition, recent rains have triggered lahars on the volcano slopes, resulting in the closure of one major road and affecting two others.
  • National authorities are monitoring the situation.

  • The volcanic activity of Fuego Volcano is decreasing, but ash fall is still affecting nearby communities, including San Pedro Yepocapa, Panimaché I and II, Morelia, Santa Sofía, Los Yucales, and El Porvenir, as registered by the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH).
  • According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), 818 people have been evacuated, and nearly 37,000 people have been affected, mostly due to the ash fall.
  • The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) continues to monitor the volcano, coordinating with local authorities and territorial coordinators, and implementing procedures established in the National Response Plan for this kind of events.
