  • A new tropical cyclone named ZELIA formed between the Timor Sea and the eastern Indian Ocean on the morning (UTC) of 11 February and started moving south-west toward central Western Australia state. On 12 February at 6.00, its centre was located over the Ocean approximately 155 km north of the coastal town of Port Hedland, northern Pilbara region, central Western Australia, with maximum sustained winds of 114 km/h (tropical storm).
  • ZELIA is expected to make landfall in the area of Roebourne town and Karratha town, northern Pilbara region on the morning of 14 February, with maximum sustained winds up to 190 km/h (tropical cyclone).
  • Over the next 96 hours, very heavy rainfall, strong winds, and storm surges are forecast over coastal and central Western Australia, in particular over the whole Pilbara region. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a warning for gales over most of this region.

  • On 12 February, tropical cyclone ZELIA continued south over the Indian Ocean toward the northern Pilbara region, central Western Australia, strengthening, with maximum sustained winds up to 157 km/h (tropical cyclone). On 13 February at 6.00 (UTC), its centre was located over the Ocean approximately 130 km north of the coastal town of Port Hedland, northern Pilbara region, with maximum sustained winds of 234 km/h.
  • ZELIA is expected to make landfall in the area just east of Roebourne town and Karratha town, northern Pilbara region on the evening of 14 February, with maximum sustained winds up to 250 km/h. After that, it is forecast to continue inland over the Pilbara region on 15 February, weakening, with maximum sustained winds around 120 km/h.
  • Over the next 72 hours, very heavy rainfall, strong winds, and storm surges are forecast over coastal and central Western Australia, in particular over the whole Pilbara region. The warning for gales over most of this region issued by the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) is in force.

  • Tropical cyclone ZELIA made landfall over the area between the coastal towns of Port Hedland and Pardoo, northern Pilbara region on 14 February around 4.30 (UTC) with maximum sustained winds up to 213 km/h. On 14 February at 7.00, its centre was located inland approximately 65 km east of Port Hedland town, with maximum sustained winds of 177 km/h.
  • After the landfall, media report approximately 160 evacuated people in a number of shelters across Port Hedland, South Hedland, and Karratha towns. Several closed roads and school closures were reported across the northern Pilbara region.
  • ZELIA is expected to continue southward inland over the central-western Western Australia on 15-16 February, further weakening and becoming a tropical storm.
  • Over the next 48 hours, very heavy rainfall and strong winds are forecast over central-western Western Australia. The warning for gales over most of the Pilbara region issued by the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) remains in force.
