South-east Asia - Tropical depression TWENTY (ECHO 03 Sep 2025)Fri, 29 Aug 2025 10:46

  • A new tropical depression named TWENTY (locally known as JACINTO in the Philippines) has formed over the eastern South China Sea and is moving westward toward central Vietnam. As of 29 August at 00:00 UTC, its centre was located  approximately 460 km southeast of Sanya City (southern Hainan Island, southeastern China), with maximum sustained winds of 56 km/h (tropical depression category).
  • In the Philippines, the combined effects of TWENTY, the southwest monsoon, and a low pressure area have caused over 100 000 displaced people and affected more than 140 000 individuals across at least seven regions of the country as reported by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
  • TWENTY is expected to move northwestward, crossing the Paracel Islands on 29 August and passing close to the southern coast of Hainan on 29–30 August, where it is likely to strengthen into a tropical storm. Afterwards, it is forecast to make landfall near the central-eastern coast of Vietnam, close to Dong Hoi City, on 30 August.
  • On 29–31 August, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in most of Hainan, central and northern Vietnam, northern Thailand, and central to northern Laos.
  • These areas have already been impacted by the passage of KAJIKI, which resulted in at least 12 fatalities.
