Several wildfires have been burning across central and south-western Bolivia over the last few days, causing population evacuations and damage. The affected departments are Santa Cruz (the worst affected), Beni, Potosí, and Cochabamba.
According to the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), as at 20 August, there are currently eight active wildfires, and they are under control. As at 22 August, two major wildfires reached a burnt area of nearly 30,000 hectares across the Santa Cruz department and approximately 13,500 hectares in the Beni department, as reported by the JRC Global Wildfires Information System (GWIS).
The IFRC reports, as at 22 August, around 500 evacuated people and approximately 1,000 people assisted by national authorities throughout the affected areas. The government declared the National Emergency Situation as of 20 August.
Over the next 48 hours, according to the JRC Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS), the fire danger forecast is from high to very extreme over central-southern and southern Bolivia.
