  • Severe storms have hit New Zealand, bringing heavy rainfall, strong winds, and flooding, particularly to the southern island. The resulting disruption has been significant, with major traffic congestion, power outages, and school closures reported.
  • According to media as at 2 May, in Christchurch and Wellington, intense rainfall has overwhelmed river systems and storm drains, forcing road closures and evacuations. Several schools have been closed due to unsafe travel conditions or flooding.
  • As at 2 May, a state of local emergency remains in effect for Christchurch City in the Canterbury region, South Island.
  • Over the next 48 hours, more moderate rain is expected over the southern part of both the South Island (Invercargill) and the North Island (Wellington).
