  • Heavy rainfall has been affecting south-western China , particularly the Shigatse prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region, and the neighbouring eastern Nepal- mainly the Rasuwa district - over the past 48 hours, causing flash floods and triggering landslides that have resulted in casualties and severe damage.
  • Media report, as of 9 July, nine fatalities, 31 still missing persons (of whom 20 are in Nepal and 11 in China), 355 evacuated people and 55 missing people. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing.
  • The border area was particularly affected. The Friendship bridge, one of the main bridges connecting China and Nepal, was washed away.
  • Over the next 72 hours, very heavy rainfall is still forecast over most of Nepal, while no more rainfall is forecast over the southern Tibet Autonomous Region.
Nepal - Severe weather, floods and landslides
  • Since the beginning of July, heavy rainfall has impacted several parts of Nepal, triggering floods, landslides, and severe weather-related incidents. These events have caused casualties and significant damage to infrastructure.
  • According to the Nepal Disaster Risk Reduction Portal (DRR Portal), since the start of the month, 18 people have died, 20 are missing - of which 18 are linked to the Rasuwa flash flood event at the border with China - and 35 others have been injured. Additionally, over 1,110 families have been affected, with 35 houses partially or fully damaged.
  • Moderate to locally heavy rainfall is expected across most regions of Nepal over the next 48 hours.
