  • Over the last two weeks, Mauritania has been affected by heavy rainfalls, triggering overflows of the Senegal River and floods, and causing fatalities, displacement, and destruction. The most affected regions include Gorgol, Guidimakha, Brakna, and Trarza.
  • As of 30 August, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) reports two fatalities, 5,700 people displaced, and a total of 6,540 people affected. Additionally, houses were destroyed, and crops and livestock were lost. In the Guidimakha region in the southeast, the road from Seilibaby to Ghabou has been cut off.
  • Over the next 48 hours, more rain is forecast particularly over the south of Mauritania. As reported by the IFRC, the Senegal River Basin Development Authority (OMVS) issued warnings as there is a significant risk of flooding across various regions of Mauritania, with peak flooding anticipated from the end of August into September 2025.
