  • The humanitarian impact continues to escalate following the passage of Tropical Storm DITWAH, which triggered severe floods and landslides across most parts of Sri Lanka.
  • According to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), as of 4 December, the storm and resulting disasters have caused 479 deaths, most in Kandy District,118 fatalities, followed by Nuwara Eliya, 89 deaths, and Badulla, 83 deaths. Additionally, 350 people remain missing, with 171 of them in Kandy. Over 1.6 million people have been affected, and nearly 189,000 have been relocated to 1,347 safety centres.
  • On 29 November, Sri Lanka requested assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM). On 1 December, the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMS) was activated in rapid mapping mode (), producing nine maps to date.
  • For the next three days, moderate to locally heavy rainfall is expected across most of the country, particularly in the northern and southern regions.

  • The humanitarian impact continues to increase following the passage of Tropical Storm DITWAH, which triggered severe flooding and landslides across much of Sri Lanka. 
  • As at 5 December, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) reports 486 deaths and 341 missing persons, including 171 in the Kandy district and 73 in the Nuwara Eliya district. Additionally, 171,788 people remain displaced across 1,231 safety centers. The storm has affected more than 1.84 million people across 25 districts, destroying 2,303 houses and partially damaging 52,489 others.
  • On 29 November, Sri Lanka requested assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM). In response, Germany has offered in kind assistance including shelter items. On 1 December, the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMS) was activated in rapid mapping mode (). So far, 19 maps have been produced.
  • More rainfall is expected over the whole country for the next 24 hours, with heavy rainfall in southwestern areas.

  • The death toll in Sri Lanka from tropical storm DITWAH, which triggered severe flooding and landslides, has reached 639 people, with the majority of fatalities in Kandy District (234 deaths). Additionally, 203 people remain missing. Humanitarian needs are high. 
  • According to the Sri Lanka Disaster Management Service, the storm has affected more than 1.8 million people, with over 90,000 houses damaged or destroyed.
  • On 29 November, Sri Lanka requested assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM). In response, Germany, France, Luxembourg have offered in kind assistance including shelter items and Italy offered technical expertise. On 1 December, the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMS) was activated in rapid mapping mode (. So far, 30 maps have been produced.
  • On 9 December, DG ECHO announced EUR 1.8 million to support relief efforts in Sri Lanka. Humanitarian partners are already responding to the increasing needs on the ground.
  • From 10–13 December, moderate to locally heavy rainfall is expected across most of Sri Lanka, particularly in the northern districts.

  • The passage of the tropical storm DITWAH and its remnants across Sri Lanka over the period from 27 to 29 November caused very heavy rainfall, floods and landslides that have resulted in casualties and severe damage throughout most of the country. The worst affected districts are Puttalam, Colombo, Gampaha, Mannar, Badulla, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Kurunegala.
  • The Disaster Management Center (DMC) reports, as of 3 December, 474 fatalities, 356 people missing, nearly 201,900 currently evacuated people across 1,385 safety centres and a total of approximately 1.58 million affected people, with over 623,300 across the Puttalam and Colombo districts. In addition, the same source also reports 971 fully damaged and 40,358 partially damaged houses throughout the country.
  • On 29 November, Sri Lanka activated the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) for search and relief operations.
  • On 1 December, the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMS) was activated in rapid mapping mode () and five maps have been produced so far.
  • Over the next 96 hours, moderate rainfall is forecast over parts of the country.

  • The passage of the tropical storm DITWAH and its remnants across Sri Lanka over the period from 27 to 29 November caused very heavy rainfall, floods and landslides that have resulted in casualties and severe damage in the country. The humanitarian impact is severe and continues to increase. The worst affected districts are Puttalam, Colombo and Kandy.
  • According to the Disaster Management Center (DMC) reports, as of 12 December, the death toll stands at 639 fatalities. DMC also reports 210 missing people, nearly 84,700 evacuated people across 866 active safety centres and a total of approximately 1.7 million affected people. The same source also reports 5,588 fully damaged and 87,496 partially damaged houses in the country. 
  • On 29 November, Sri Lanka requested assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM). In response, Germany, France, Luxembourg have offered in kind assistance including shelter items and Italy offered technical expertise. DG ECHO civil protection humanitarian experts have been deployed to Sri Lanka since the beginning of the emergency.
  • On 1 December, the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMS) was activated in rapid mapping mode (). So far, 30 maps have been produced.
