  • A 5.9 M earthquake at a depth of 10 km occurred on 9 January at 8.59 UTC (17.59 local time) in Niigata Prefecture after the strong earthquake of 7.5 M that hit the same area on 1 January. The epicentre was located approximately 50 km west-southwest of Sado City, Niigata Prefecture and 70 km north-east of Suzu City in Ishikawa Prefecture.
  • According to USGS PAGER, up to 15,000 people were exposed to moderate shaking and 4,018,000 to light shaking. No damage or casualties have been reported following the 5.9 M earthquake.
  • The Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA) is monitoring the status of damage after the 7.5 M earthquake. At least 203 people have died and one person is missing in Ishikawa Prefecture. A total of 523 people have been injured, 981 people have been displaced, and 3,176 buildings have been damaged.
