  • An earthquake of 6.3 M at a depth of 10 km occurred across far eastern Indonesia on 12 August at 8.24 UTC (17.24 local time). The epicentre was located inland in the northern Papua province, close to the coast and to the border with Papua New Guinea, approximately 6 km south of the Arara town and 190 km west of the Jayapura city. Three aftershocks from 4.8 M to 5.1 M have been recorded in the area on the same day as the main event.
  • USGS PAGER estimates that up to 6,000 people were exposed to very strong shaking and up to 18,000 to strong shaking.
  • Media report, as of 13 August, some damaged buildings in the area of the Upper Tor district, Sarmi regency, Papua province.
