  • An earthquake of 7.8 M at a depth of 19.5 km occurred in the northern Pacific Ocean, 32 km east of the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia on 18 September at 18.58 UTC (19 September at 05.58 local time). The epicentre was approximately 127 km  east of Petropavlovsk in Kamchatsky, the Russian Far East region. At least four aftershocks with a magnitude between 5.6 and 5.8 have been reported in the area.
  • The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a tsunami threat for the coast located within 1,000 km from the epicenter, including Shemya Island in Alaska, which was then cancelled.
  • USGS PAGER estimates that up to 255,000 people were exposed to strong shaking.
  • According to media, there are no reports of any damage or casualties.
  • The Kamchatka Peninsula experienced an 8.8 M earthquake on 30 July, and a 7.4 M earthquake on 15 September.
