  • An earthquake of 6.5 M at a depth of 35 km occurred in the Papua province, far east of Indonesia on 16 October at 5:48 UTC (14:48 local time). The epicentre was located inland, near the coast, approximately 38 km south-east of the town of Sarmi, Sarmi regency. Four aftershocks from 4.5 M to 5.3 M were recorded across the area over 16-17 October, after the main event.
  • USGS PAGER estimates that up to 24,000 people were exposed to strong shaking and up to 22,000 people to moderate shaking.
  • Media report, as of 17 October, a number of damaged buildings and damaged roads across the affected Sarmi regency.
