  • A 7.6 M earthquake struck at a depth of 44 km off the eastern coast of Aomori Prefecture, northern Honshu Island, Japan, on 8 December at 14:15 UTC (23:15 local time). The epicentre was located 63 km east-northeast of Rokkasho city. 
  • At least nine aftershocks, ranging in magnitude from 4.4 M to 6.6 M, were recorded in the area.
  • Tsunami warnings were issued along the eastern coasts of Hokkaido and Aomori Prefecture immediately afterwards, but were all lifted by 21:20 on 8 December. The media indicate tsunami waves of up to 70 cm in some areas.
  • USGS PAGER estimates up to 192,000 people exposed to very strong shaking, while over 1 million to strong shaking.
  • The Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA) reported that at least 25 people were injured across Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate Prefectures,  and 25 buildings were damaged. All evacuation orders have been lifted.
